The Business Case
Old Mutual Internal Quality Management (IQM) had spent some time investigating the integrity of their data. They found that there was a need to create a system whereby data rules could be created and deviations analysed, so that data integrity could be maintained.
ViaData
ViaData was called in to create the application that could do this, as it was felt that ViaData understood data integrity and relationships very well, and data was a core business competency. The professionalism of ViaData's staff was also noted, and the relationship that ViaData had developed with both Lechabile and Old Mutual IQM was also particularly good.
The Solution
ViaData initially set up a repository to store analysis findings when investigating data issues. It was then possible to look at the results of any data rule violation in isolation. The system is set up to create data measurement and correction tasks and then correlate results so that data integrity can be tested and maintained. Data is kept on the mainframe in Object Star and Cobol IDMS as well as in SQL Server databases.
The system was later made year 2000 compliant by ViaData, which was also tasked to undertake a data transformation exercise. ViaData created a data repository for four areas of Old Mutual's business and an audit trail was also created to reflect the history of the data and any changes made. Data control and integrity has subsequently been completely outsourced to Lechabile from Old Mutual IQM, and the system created by ViaData is still used to maintain data integrity and control.
